These shoes

I couldn't bear to see them sold in a yard sale

so I stole them
right out of the Rubbermaid bin
the day before the big sale.

What would they go for--
a dollar, maybe two

These tiny, navy blue Converse All Stars
barely used
with the slightest bits of sand
and a pebble stuck in the soles
and maybe a touch of stickiness from a popsicle drip.

I couldn't bear to see them go

Maybe it's seller's remorse over our babies' crib,
but I couldn't bear to see them go.
